FAQ’s

What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is part traditional talking therapy and part deep relaxation, for the body and mind, with guided visualisation. It helps you to change all the unhelpful things that go on in your  own mind. The stuff that stops you living as the best version of yourself.

Is it the same as stage hypnosis?

Its a world away from stage hypnosis. There are no swinging pocket watches, look into my eyes,  or mind control. It may all sound a little “out there”, woo woo and unscientific. However it has come a long way from its origins in the 1700.s.

Is there any scientific proof that it works?

Research such as that co-led by  Dr Dragos Chirnoaga from CUB Erasmus Hospital, Brussels, Belgium ,found that hypnosis  successfully replaced intravenous sedation in three quarters of patients. Meanwhile 90 per cent of those who had hypnosis  for ten minutes before as well as during the operation did not require intravenous sedation.

It  can also help lessen a wide range of anxiety-based conditions which often repeat as thought loops in our minds, affecting our mental health and potentially leading to physical symptoms of pain and discomfort.

What happens at the first visit? (see Solution Focused Hypnotherapy page for further info)

The first visit consists of an initial consultation – this usually lasts around 50 minutes to an hour and involves you explaining why you are seeking hypnotherapy. I will be  some background and medical questions so I can build a picture of you and how you are affected, what you want things to be like in the future and what ‘resources’ you may have to help you get there.I’ll gather information and confirm the info I already have is correct.

I’ll give you an explanation of how the brain works and how hypnotherapy can help. Many people find the explanation helps all on its own. I’ll email you an MP3 (also available on this site) for  to you to listen to every night as you drift off to sleep.

Do I have to listen to the MP3 every night?

The whole process is much quicker and effective if you listen to the MP3 in between sessions.

Will I be put into trance at the initial consultation?

No the initial consultation does not include trance work.

What is Trance in Hypnotherapy?

Its a deeply relaxed state with guided visualisation, similar to a vivid daydream.

Can I be controlled under Hypnotherapy?

You’re fully in control when in trance.

Can I get stuck in hypnosis?

No, you can always bring yourself out of the hypnotic state.

Will I be able to go into trance?

Yes the only time Hypnosis doesn’t work is  if you don’t want to be hypnotised.
